Fried sticks of vegan cheese here!!! Get them while they’re hot and melty and gooey!!! Finally these vegan mozzarella sticks came out the way I wished that they would have in the past. My previous attempts at making them were utter failures. I’m pretty sure it was mainly because I used a bad breading process. As I was making these though, I could tell they were gonna be glorious. What happy hour menu would be complete without breaded sticks of melty cheese?
My first match with vegan mozzarella sticks ended up like the first Rocky movie. With the kitchen as our fighting ring, the vegan mozzarella sticks ended up bleeding cheese everywhere and I ended up looking around dumbfounded and calling out for my wife (Adrian wasn’t his wife in that movie yet, I know). I just wish wife-unit could have come running down the stairs for me. Unfortunately, we don’t have stairs.
The re-match with vegan mozzarella sticks, however, was my time to shine. Sweet victory. Unlike Rocky II however, I proceeded to eat my opponent after the fight…
Vegan Mozzarella Sticks
- 1 block of Daiya cheese – Italian flavor – cut into sticks about 4 inches by 1 inch by 1/2 inch (you know how big mozzarella sticks are)
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup of all purpose flour
- 1 cup Italian breadcrumbs
- 2 tbsp vegan Parmesan cheese
- 1 tsp salt
- vegetable oil for frying
Heat the vegetable oil to 360 degrees in a suitable skillet or pan so that the oil is about an inch high.
Put the water and flour into two separate small bowls. Dip the vegan cheese sticks into the water, let the excess run off for a second, then dip into the flour, making sure they are fully coated. It doesn’t have to be a full shell just enough so that there is a light coating of flour. Allow the coated vegan cheese sticks to dry for about 5 minutes.
Mix the breadcrumbs, vegan Parmesan, and salt in a shallow dish.
Dip the cheese sticks in the water again and roll them through the breadcrumb mixture and allow them to dry. Dip the cheese sticks once more in the water and roll once more in the breadcrumb mixture to ensure the entire surface of the cheese stick is coated with breadcrumbs.
Deep fry the coated vegan mozzarella sticks until golden brown. Move to a paper towel covered plate to cool. These are best when dipped into a warm marinara sauce.
